Cy Thao and his family fled across the Mekong when Cy was three. Cy’s father, like many others, did not want to leave Thailand at first. He was hoping to return to Laos, where many of his family remained. Cy and his family lived for several years in a refugee camp before coming to the US.
Cy grew up in the US and became a painter, an activist, and is now a Minnesota State Representative. In 2004, he had a one man show entitled “The Hmong Migration” at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. He lives in St Paul, MN with his wife, the writer Lee Vang, and their two daughters.
